IceNu
Spontaneous Ice Nucleation
This study continued prior investigation of spontaneous ice nucleation to further the understanding of cirrus cloud behavior. High altitude atmospheric samples were collected by aircraft in clear air and upwind of lenticular clouds for use in this laboratory program. Aerosol bag samples were collected and introduced into cloud chambers and used as cloud condensation nuclei to form supercooled droplets for freezing studies. Ice crystal samples were collected, studied and compared to crystals formed in the lab. Air filter samples were also taken to identify chemical constituents in our air and particle samples. Sabreliner flights provided raw materials for use in laboratory experiments.
