NOAH II w/Lexan wind screen
An instrument to measure precipitation in all phases by weighing the mass of precipitation falling into the gauge. The gauge is prefilled with antifreeze to operate in below-freezing conditions and a thin coating of oil to prevent reevaporation of liquid water. ISFS used three of these during PCAPS, but found that in rapid snowfall events that a "snow bridge" would form within the opening of the gauge, preventing further snowfall from being recorded until well after the event. This gauge has been superceeded by the OTT disdrometers.
