Overview of the Scientific Motivation and Observational Facility Contributions for T-PARC:



The talks in these sessions are meant to provide a flow of information from those involved in planning the experiment to the participants. The talks will describe the scientific and societal motivation for the experiment in participating countries and the aircraft, sounding, ship and other major observational facilities that these nations will provide. The talks are intended to be concise and not delve deeply into the scientific issues or flight plans, but function to provide everyone with a common background for more detailed scientific and facility discussions later in the meeting. These talks are not intended to be personal research, but representative of the broad goals of national efforts.

Collaborative Experiments:



A number of experiments are planned to occur within a similar time frame as T-PARC. Some are closely connected to T-PARC in their experimental design and others are simply two-way opportunities for collaboration. Science and Strawplans for Experimental Design:

These presentations on some of the primary scientific topics of interest to the experiment are intended to delve deeper into the scientific issues and propose straw plans for observational (flight track, soundings, satellite ops) and modeling strategies to meet these scientific goals. The two presenters for each topic are challenged to come up with a single presentation and encouraging input from other researchers to present a consensus viewpoint, and with some consideration of competing options, rather than their own research ideas. The presenters are expected to have an integrated view that includes all relevant airborne, sounding, ship and satellite measurements, plus some preliminary views on the relevance of operational and research modeling. Be concise and allow time for discussion.

Experimental Design:



The charge to the working groups is to begin the organization of the materials required for an operations plan. For example, such a major field experiment with multiple aircraft will require an operations plan that contains a series of preselected flight plans that can be adapted to the specific goals of an aircraft mission. The desired operations for dropsondes from the research aircraft and driftsonde should be outlined as well as radiosondes from ships and ground-based stations. The working group discussions can contain short presentations by individual scientists on their scientific reasoning for the operational scenarios. The general intent, however, is to produce a few consensus scenarios on operations where possible rather than a large list.



Each group is assigned a leader and a rapporteur.  At the end of the day, the leader and rapporteur will present a summary of the group discussion to the plenary session.  These summaries will identify the primary objectives, the assets critical to each objective, plans for utilization of the assets, and potential problems.
