Southern Indian Ocean
Deployment sites for DYNAMO |
The Indian Ocean is one of the Earth-s most sensitive regions where the ocean and atmosphere interact, thereby affecting global climate. The Maldives-Chagos Archipelago provides a unique setting for this type of observational research because it is situated in a key formation region of the MJO, and provides an excellent location for land- and aircraft-based measurements in the Indian Ocean.
DYNAMO will provide researchers with vital observations of the MJO, a poorly understood phenomena, particularly during the initiation phase. The results will help researchers to more accurately forecast the weather and climate of the equatorial Indian Ocean and around the world. Large-scale weather events, such as the MJO, create pulses that have direct effects on regional weather pattens around the world, similar to that of a chain reaction.
Maldives
The Maldive Islands provide a unique location for this type of observational research because it is located in a key formation region of the MJO and provides an excellent location for land-based measurements in the Indian Ocean.
Two islands in the Maldives will host DYNAMO instrumentation - Gan Island, Addu Atoll and Hulhulemale Island, North Malé Atoll.
