Data Produced
The SAVANT (Stable Atmospheric Variability and Transport) project produced pollutant dispersion, wind, cloud cover, and ground, air and sky temperature data recorded during nighttime boundary layers for two months in the fall of 2018 at a commercial farm close to Champaign, Illinois. Aerosol dispersion data were collected with two aerosol lidars and one Doppler lidar from the University of South Carolina and the University of Illinois. In addition, the Doppler lidar from the University of Illinois collected wind speed data. The scanning lidars produced 3-dimensional maps of pollutant concentrations and the wind field. Point concentrations of released aerosols at several locations downwind were collected with Dustrack samplers which were installed alongside sonic anemometer sensors to measure 1 HZ pollutant profiles. Ground and sky temperature were measured with 20 Hz infrared thermocouples. The SAVANT project page can be found at https://www.eol.ucar.edu/field_projects/savant .
The NCAR Earth Observing Laboratory (EOL) collected meteorology data with the Integrated Surface Flux System (ISFS) and the Integrated Sounding System (ISS). ISFS collected high speed wind data (CSAT3 sonic anemometers). Anemometers were installed on towers at multiple heights to measure the wind vertical profiles. Four towers were distributed in a gully direction (drainage flow direction): at the top of a gully (background flow, initial tower), at middle of the gully (release tower), at two colliding locations of the gully drainage and background flows (upper and lower convergence towers). Corresponding thermocouples were installed with sonic sensors to measure the air temperature profiles. Vertical boundary layer profiles of wind speed, wind direction, and temperatures were measured with the ISS system. Additionally, the ISS ceilometer collected data throughout the measurement campaign.
These data will be analyzed and can inform under different environmental conditions (sky cover, cloud cover, heat flux, and wind speed), how the collided flows behave and how the aerosols disperse. Raw data will be used to produce animations of aerosol dispersions/flows.
Data Formats
Observational and analyzed data will be stored in tables in a format readable by common software packages (ASCII comma delimited files). Animations of aerosol dispersions/flows will be stored in commonly used video formats suitable for replay in web browsers.
Access and Sharing Policies
The SAVANT Data Policy can be found at https://www.eol.ucar.edu/content/savant-data-policy. All investigators participating in SAVANT agree to promptly provide their data to other SAVANT investigators upon request and to submit their final quality controlled data to the SAVANT Data Archive Center (https://data.eol.ucar.edu/master_list/?project=SAVANT).
Data collected by EOL, including ISFS and ISS observational data, will follow the NCAR EOL Data Policy which can be found https://www.eol.ucar.edu/content/eol-data-policy.
Other data including lidar, aerosol concentration, and analyzed data from the PIs’ instruments will be made available to other researchers and the SAVANT Data Archive Center within 2 years after the project period is ended. This will allow time for QA/QC of the data, and analysis and peer review of findings based on the data. If not available in the SAVANT Data Archive, these PI instrument datasets can be requested via email (April Hiscox, HISCOX@mailbox.sc.edu; Junming Wang, wangjim@illinois.edu; David Kristovich, dkristo@illinois.edu). Depending on the data size and requestors preference, the raw quality controlled data will be provided via an FTP site online or be returned on a universal serial bus (USB) compliant device mailed to the research team. Data requestors will bear the cost of providing and shipping a storage device.
Re-use and Re-distribution of Derivatives
Derivative works based on data, software or animations should cite the project as a source following standard ethical practices for citing sources. See the NSF Acknowledgement below and the SAVANT Data Policy (https://www.eol.ucar.edu/content/savant-data-policy) for more information on acknowledgement requirements.
Plans for Archiving Data
The SAVANT long-term data archive is located at https://data.eol.ucar.edu/master_list/?project=SAVANT .
EOL ISFS and ISS data will be archived by NCAR EOL in the SAVANT Data Archive at https://data.eol.ucar.edu/master_list/?project=SAVANT. Lidar, aerosol, and analyzed data, and animations will be made available on web servers at UIUC. Principal investigator Dr. Wang at UIUC has been provided with sufficient computer storage to store and share the data generated in their research. Data and animations will be publically available as long as there is sufficient interest.
See the “Access and Sharing Policies” section above for additional data archival plans.
NSF Acknowledgement
All materials will contain acknowledgement of NSF support as per NSF policy: “This material is based upon work supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. 1733746.” Additionally, materials will contain a disclaimer that “any opinions, findings, and conclusions or recommendations expressed in this material are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the views of the National Science Foundation.”
Long-Term Data Archive
The long-term data archive will be located at NCAR EOL (https://www.eol.ucar.edu/field_projects/savant). Lidar and sampler data can be provided in raw format to EOL for inclusion with data archive for EOL facilities data. See the “Access and Sharing Policies” section above for data archival plans.
Data Transmission during Field Phase
Data will be moved to home institutions after deployment. Lidar data is stored on the instrument itself and will be backed up to a project laptop after each day’s operation. It is expected that a copy of all data will be archived and stored at each PIs home institution.
