Salt Lake City - Summer Ozone Study
The goal of the Salt Lake City - Summer Ozone Study (SLC-SOS) campaign is to investigate ozone production and pollutant evolution. High Ozone mixing ratios are a serious summertime health and economic concern for Utah's Wasatch Front residents. The Mobile project for 2024 will be ground-based due to the unavailability of the University of Wyoming King-Air. The PIs will collect data along the Wasatch Front during August 2024.
In 2025, the project will conduct research flights with the University of Wyoming King-Air along the Wasatch Front between 1 July and 31 August 2025 to 1) investigate ozone production and pollutant evolution in thermally driven lake breeze flows over and surrounding Salt Lake City (SLC), 2) quantify the contribution of individual and specific VOC classes to ozone production, 3) characterize differences in the photochemical environment in the SLC region on smoke-impacted versus smoke-free days with daily 8-hour ozone values (MDA8) near or above the standard, and 4) investigate the emissions from specific point and area sources. The PIs will also collect data in this same region during August 2024, however, due to the unavailability of the aircraft, the instruments will be ground-based and mobile.
