TI3GER Data Policy
  1. All investigators participating in TI3GER agree to promptly submit their final Quality Controlled data to the TI3GER Field Data Archive (FDA) (or to an archive as specified in the TI3GER Data Management Plan) along with required dataset documentation at the latest within 6 months after the end of the field phase (30 October 2022) to facilitate inter-comparison of results, quality control checks and inter-calibrations, as well as an integrated interpretation of the combined dataset. Data will be restricted for an additional 6 months (until 30 April 2023) following the data submission period so that Principal Investigators (PIs) may have exclusive access to the TI3GER data.
  2. During this restricted data access period, defined as a total of 12 months following the end of the TI3GER Field Project Deployment, TI3GER Principal Investigators (PIs) may have exclusive access to this data. This time period is designed to provide an opportunity to refine algorithms to reflect real-world observations and quality control the combined dataset as well as to provide the investigators ample time to publish their results. Data may be password protected upon the request of the data provider.
  3. All EOL platform and instrument data will follow the EOL Data Policy.
  4. All data in the TI3GER FDA will be considered Public Domain at 12 months following the end of the TI3GER Field Project Deployment (i.e., on 1 May 2023 and thereafter). A dataset within the TI3GER archive can be opened to the public domain earlier at the discretion of the data provider for this particular dataset.
  5. All data shall be promptly provided to other TI3GER investigators upon request. All TI3GER investigators will have equal access to all data. A list of TI3GER investigators will be maintained by NCAR/EOL and will include the Principal Investigators (PIs) directly participating in the field experiment as well as collaborating scientists who have provided guidance in the planning and analysis of TI3GER data.
  6. During the restricted data access period, the investigator(s) who collected the data must be notified first of the intent to use the data.
  7. The public data are freely available for exploratory analysis. At such time as a journal publication or conference presentation is planned using these data, the relevant PIs of measurements included in the analysis should be informed of the nature and aims of the research project and the intended use of the data. PI contact details are given in the header files of the ICARTT-formatted data. Contacting the PIs will ensure they have adequate foreknowledge of the proposed research and thus the opportunity to contribute as appropriate to the use of TI3GER data in the proposed research project. If the PI makes a significant intellectual contribution to the research, or if the data are essential to the work, or if an important result or conclusion depends on the data, co−authorship would normally be expected. This should be discussed at an early stage in the work. Manuscripts using the data with TI3GER field project co−authors should be sent to the coauthors for review well before (e.g. 4 weeks) they are submitted for publication, to ensure that the quality and limitations of the data are accurately represented and the coauthors have adequate time to provide input.
  8. TI3GER field project data are made freely available to the public and the scientific community. However, the availability of these data does not constitute publication, and the TI3GER science team requires citable outputs from their research to ensure its continued support. Acknowledgements as part of conference presentations: “NSF award AGS-2027252” for the TI3GER campaign, and other funding sources (as applicable). Acknowledgments for publications: “Financial support for TI3GER from US National Science Foundation award AGS-2027252 (PI: R. Volkamer) is gratefully acknowledged. TI3GER was supported by the National Center for Atmospheric Research, which is a major facility sponsored by the NSF under Cooperative Agreement no. 1852977. The data were collected using NSF’s Lower Atmosphere Observing Facilities, which are managed and operated by NCAR’s Earth Observing Laboratory. The GV aircraft was operated by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Earth Observing Laboratory’s (EOL) Research Aviation Facility (RAF).”
  9. International agencies, professional societies, and research organizations often require researchers to formally cite data and sources that led to a given research result. To support this, DOIs or Digital Object Identifiers (considered “perpetual” identifiers) will be assigned to FINAL datasets housed within the TI3GER FDA. These DOIs should be used in TI3GER related publications. DOIs will not be created for preliminary data.
