8/20/04 ~11:30 local Put in new batteries to Mote #16 and reinstalled daugther board.

8/20/04 ~15:15 local Mote #20 (A) buried at 5cm 'yellow' and 'orange' Mote #21 (B) buried at 5cm 'yellow' These were easy to install and appeared that possibly and elk/deer/moose had possibly pulled them out but that's not certain. Mote #18(old 23 site) covered wires so the squirrel won't see-em. Took photos of all motes

~13:25 local Installed Mote18 in place of #23. This mote has proper calibrations for lm20 strings and it's own vref value so the data should be OK. SO changed id number in prep.config so it should be covared/etc. Why in the world did i do this: wrapped foil around all tsoil mote stand. This site is so wet i doubt any self-respecting chipmonk would go for these with exception of at #18. That mote has most of the wires exposed on the ground from the post to the dirt entry point. They need to be dug in later if possible.

14:45 local Wrapped foil on all tsoil motes. Did better job than other sites because the wires were dug in here and i could skirt the bottom and cover with debri. Note Mote12 is 3' from burrow....yikes! could explain why 3 are dead and there are lots of tiny pieces of wire around. At least 2 visible cuts that might be repairable when rain quits.

12:30-12:45 Mote 16 Needs AA batteries! Has low voltage. Tried to add foil around posts for 16,24,25 but not 15. Need to bring trowel to dig the wires into the gnd from post to where probe is. Lightning in area, decided to wait / move-on.

08/10/04 Motes were checked that appeared to have 'drained batteries' PINE: Note: all 4 motes at this site had the old style regulator that drains the batteries with leakage current. All appeared to be trying to report. A, #12, 2.5V, disabled regulator and added Alkaline batt, 3.2V, PV disconnected Per 'prep' at aspen, tsoils 3,4,5 are bad B, #13, 2.7V, disabled regulator and added Alkaline batt, 3.2V, PV disconnected Per 'prep' at aspen, tsoils 2,6 are bad Rodent chewed through 1 of these sets at least. C, #15, 2.1V, retrieved to reconfigure in Boulder due to wiring method D, #25, 2.5V, retrieved to reconfigure in Boulder due to wiring method WILLOW: D, #23, 1.4V, was not reporting, old style regulator on this unit disabled and added Alkaline batt, 3.2V NOTE: at aster/prep indicated that it is still down.....rf problems? NOTE: one sensor is sitting on the ground and not installed in soil ASPEN: Note: all 4 motes here have the newer 'zener' regulator, although 2 were down. by examination of the 1st two noted, this approach seems to work. A, #14, 3.1V, observed normal reporting 'blink' but base isn't receiving NOTE: poor exposure behind some bushes/trees but worse the receiving antenna is on the opposite side of the tower and although we tried to improve the situation, it still appears to not be heard by the base. D, #26, 3.1V, red-led on continuously, not reporting. NOTE: it somewhat appeared that the battery and daughter boards were not well secured which is possibly its problem. We taped the batteries in and secured the daughter board and then it began reporting.

This comment from yesterday, when I couldn't get through on the net: Location is about 8m N of the outer SE guy point, in a peat bog. I mixed up Brown and Black, so Brown is at 15cm, Black is at 10cm, and the rest at 5cm. All holes filled up with water to about 5cm when dug out, so the sensors were installed at, or below, water line in peat. This should complete installation of all the Tsoil probes!

Three tsoil sensors were removed to have voltage regulators added to the power system. This took place last Thursday afternoon.

mote#23 has been dying over the last 2 days -- perhaps due to too much power.
